Mains powered switches require mains electrical power to be supplied, they come with a UK 3 pin plug but can also be directly wired into a fused spur.
Mains powered switches can be used as part of a bigger system incorporating multiple switches, amplifiers and taps/splitters or simply on their own being fed directly from the satellite dish. Mains powered switches are suitable for both large systems and simple domestic installations.
Switches come in either 5 or 9 wire versions. 5 wire is for TV/radio and one satellite dish position. 9 wire is for TV/radio and two satellite positions. 9 wire systems are very popular for buildings where residents speak languages other than English.
